What is the purpose of bridesmaids and best man?

During the auspicious marriage ceremony, usually you can find a bridesmaid who attends to the bride. Generally, the bridesmaid is a young woman and the principal bridesmaid is called the maid of honor. A bridesmaid can often be the sister of the bride or a friend.

The Western bridesmaid tradition has its origin from the Roman law, which required ten witnesses at a wedding. This was because it was believed that there were evil spirits who could attend marriage ceremonies. In order to drive away those evil spirits, this became the practice- in a traditional wedding the bridesmaids would escort the bride and should be dressed in identical clothing to the bride and groom. This was mainly to fool the evil spirits so that they don’t come to know who was the real bride.

Similarly, in the wedding ceremony, the groom has to be accompanied by a chief male assistant. This person is named the best man who is generally the groom’s brother or his closest male friend. In a remarriage, if the groom has a son by the previous marriage, he can be the best man of the groom. In order to become a best man in a marriage ceremony you need to have a grooming session because the best man is supposed to deliver some speeches. So if you ever play the role of the best man prepare your speech beforehand.
